Sharks and drownings make bathing in Brisbane River dangerous.
1849 River baths built near Botanic Gardens.
1859 Sandgate, right, described as embryonic
"Brighton of Brisbane".
1862 First European settlers arrive in Caloundra
area.
1867 Cyclone hits Bowen (and Townsville); again
1870, 1876; in 1884 almost every house unroofed.
1868 Caloundra town reserve proclaimed.

Cairns established to serve mining industry; named after
Queensland's Irish-born Governor, Sir William Wellington
Cairns, left.
Trinity Inlet chosen as first port for north Qld goldfields
because already known to bêche-de-mer fisherman.
1878 Land taken up at Caloundra; land sales expand
in seaside locations of Sandgate, Redcliffe, Scarborough,
Wellington Point; Bayview Hotel built at Scarborough.
1879 Scarborough Hotel built at Redcliffe as visitor
numbers increase; Redcliffe Hotel opens 1880.
1880 Queenslander house takes shape using timber,
tin and verandas.
Caloundra begins to acquire reputation as seaside resort.
Municipality of Sandgate constituted.
Land sales on North Stradbroke Is.
