A quick tour through the sporting history of Queensland.

1844 First rowing regatta held on Brisbane River.

1846 Moreton Bay Jockey Club opens at New Farm; others follow at Ipswich and Toowoomba, attracting best horses and wild colonial boys.

1860 Queens Rowing Club established at Customs House.

1863 Qld Turf Club and Qld Rifle Association formed.

1865 Eagle Farm's first race meeting.

1876 Qld Cricket Association formed.

1877 Woolloongabba recreation reserve proclaimed (Brisbane Cricket Ground 1896).

1878 First lawn bowling club opens in old Queens Park.

1883 Northern Rugby Union Club formed (later QRU); Qld wins inter-colonial rugby against NSW at Eagle Farm.

1884 Bare-fisted boxing banned in all colonies.

1888 Despite limited sporting opportunities for Aborigines, Charlie Samuels named "Champion of Australia" after running 100 yds in 9.1 secs.
