Road to the past

Even then it was a million-dollar view . . . the picture above was taken in 1885 from the rear of Toorak House on The Hill at Hamilton, looking towards Newstead House and the junction of Breakfast Creek and the Brisbane River. The old Brekkie creek bridge is on the right, and the foreground shows what is now Kingsford Smith Drive — still called Hamilton Road in those pre-aviator days. O'Reilly's Hill is in the centre of the picture.

Below is the same view in April 2002. You can still see Newstead House and its gardens but the replaced bridge is obscured. Parts of the view are changing again now as the inner city bypass takes shape.
