The female definitely wears the pants in peregrine falcon relationships.

From having final say on nest sites (referred to as eyries) to insisting on being courted anew each year, it is the larger female who dominates her male partner.

Like humans, peregrine falcons mate for life but may acquire a new partner if their mate dies.

During the initial courtship, which is repeated at the start of each mating season, the male wins his partner over by performing aerial acrobatics, swirling and diving.

He also brings her presents of food.

The relationship between the male and female can seem a little fraught at times with the female behaving aggressively towards her partner, snatching food from him and sometimes chasing him away from the nest. Consequently the male seems to approach her with caution, literally “bowing and scraping”.
